Hands on Science- This class is for students ranging in age 8-11 years old. Featuring all new topics for returning students! This general science class will cover the topics of scientific method, human anatomy, chemistry, biomes, astronomy, botany, astronomy, entomology, and so much more. Students will spend class time participating in hands-on experiments to help them begin to make observations, form questions, make predictions, test hypotheses, and analyze results.

Science Shepherd Life Science

Wednesdays 9-11AM

7th-9th Grade

This class is intended to prepare students for the rigorous college-prep work required in the Apologia science books. This class will cover the characteristics of life, the chemistry of life, cell membranes, cell organelles, DNA, cell reproduction, heredity, creation and evolution, scientific classification, the kingdoms of life, human anatomy and physiology, nutrition, and ecology.

Days & Times: Wednesdays 9-11AM
Prerequisite: Students must have a basic knowledge of elementary science concepts and be able to keep up with required weekly readings and assignments.

7th-9th Grade

Students will learn the basics of science, scientific method, and how to properly conduct an experiment. They will spend most of their time participating in hands-on experiments helping them observe, analyze, and test their scientific predictions. Students will study many geologic specimens that include fossils, rocks, and minerals and biology concepts will be introduced, which includes cells, the structure of DNA, and the classification of life. A thorough study of the human body systems will then conclude the course.

Students of physical science will learn to understand and explore the exciting, wonderful world around them. Topics include theory and practical observations related to Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Sciences. We will cover states of matter, atomic structure, periodic table, chemical bonding, reactions and energy, motion, forces, waves and sound, light, electricity, and magnetism. This course includes hands-on laboratory experience and an understanding of scientific methods.

9th-12th Grade

Apologia Biology is a rigorous college-prep course that provides a
detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general biology. This course provides the student with a strong background in the scientific method, the tools of science, microscopy, dissection, ecosystems, composition of matter, properties of water, lipids, proteins, and enzymes. It also covers cellular biology, molecular and Mendelian genetics, ecology, classification of organisms, DNA, botany, and more. In-class labs and investigations provide opportunities to develop laboratory skills, such as careful observation and interpretation of data, while review activities are incorporated to reinforce concepts.

Prerequisite: Students must be able to keep up with reading and homework in order to fully comprehend the material and to be prepared for the class discussions and experiments.

Marine Biology

10th-12th Grade

Apologia Marine Biology focuses exclusively on marine biology and marine habitats including everything from microscopic organisms that make life in the ocean possible to macroscopic marine creatures such as oysters, lobsters, and whales. Students will discover how these creatures and their physical surroundings form marine ecosystems such as intertidal zones, estuaries, coral reefs, continental shelf communities, epipelagic communities, and deep-ocean communities. Dissections are also done in this course with subjects including a clam, starfish, and a dogfish shark.
