Cross Academy is for students that desire a hands-on approach to learning about the sciences. Your student will embark on a journey of unfathomable scientific discoveries. Every class session, they will be faced with challenges and obstacles that they must overcome using the powers of deduction, problem solving, observation, and analysis. Students will become fully immersed in hands-on labs and experiments as they utilize all their visual, auditory and kinesthetic skills.

Hands-On Elementary Science

Class description:
This class is for students ranging in age 8-11 years old. Featuring all new topics for returning students!
This general science class will cover the topics of magnets, electricity, rockets, flight, light, and so much more. Students will spend most of the class time participating in hands-on experiments to help them begin to make observations, form questions, make predictions, test hypotheses, and analyze results.

Science Shepherd Life Science

Class description:This class is intended to prepare students for the rigorous college-prep work required in the Apologia science books. This class will cover the characteristics of life, the chemistry of life, cell membranes, cell organelles, DNA, cell reproduction, heredity, creation and evolution, scientific classification, the kingdoms of life, human anatomy and physiology, nutrition, and ecology.
DAYS & TIMES: Thursdays – 9-11am
Prerequisite:
Students must have a basic knowledge of elementary science concepts and be able to keep up with required weekly readings and assignments.

Apologia General Science

Class description:
This Apologia science course is the first middle school Apologia course in a series and is typically recommended for students going into the 7th or 8th grade. Throughout the course, students will be able to participate in class discussions that will allow them to ask and answer many questions about concepts found in geology, chemistry, and biology. Students will learn the basics of science, scientific method, and how to properly conduct an experiment. They will spend most of their time participating in hands-on experiments helping them observe, analyze, and test their scientific predictions. Students will study the many geologic specimens that include fossils, rocks, and minerals and biology concepts will be introduced, which includes cells, the structure of DNA, and the classification of life. A thorough study of the human body systems will then conclude the course.

Apologia Biology

Class description: Apologia Biology is a rigorous college-prep course that provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general biology. Heavily emphasizing the vocabulary of biology, it provides the student with a strong background in the scientific method, the five-kingdom classification scheme, microscopy, dissection, ecosystems, cellular biology, molecular and Mendelian genetics. In-class labs and investigations provide opportunities to develop laboratory skills, such as careful observation and interpretation of data, while review activities are incorporated to reinforce concepts.

Prerequisite: Typically, physical science. Students must be able to keep up with reading and homework in order to fully comprehend the material and to be prepared for the class discussions and experiments.

Chemistry: The Study of Matter from a Christian Worldview

Class description:

Topics include: metric measurements, chemical solutions, molecular mass and atomic theory, preparing molar solutions, chemical reactions, equations, moles, grams of reactant and product, electron configurations, the Periodic Table, ionic and covalent bonds, metal atoms, batteries, acids and bases, buffers, chemistry of carbon, organic chemistry, biochemistry, rates of chemical reactions, and environmental chemistry.

Prerequisite: Must be proficient at an algebra math level. Students must be able to keep up with reading and homework in order to fully comprehend the material and to be prepared for the class discussions and experiments.

Apologia Health and Nutrition

Class description:

Students will learn anatomy, physiology, senses, genetics, macro and micro nutrients, exercise and diet, emotional issues and mental illness, human value, culture, gender roles, families, socialization, communication skills and conflict resolution skills. Marriage, pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases are discerningly explained, along with alcohol and drug abuse, depression, pornography and other topics necessary for our young people to understand for successful navigation in adulthood. These topics are handled gently, and respectfully, but parents should evaluate their young adult’s emotional and spiritual maturity prior to lessons. Module 15 will NOT be covered in class, but will be assigned to be discussed at home in private with parents.

Class description:
Let’s take a closer look at the 50 states! Find out what makes people proud to be a Georgian, a Pennsylvanian, or a Washingtonian. From the culture, to the history, and even the food, each state has a unique offering to discover. Student will learn about the states through hands-on discovery, cooking opportunities, oral presentations, mapping, and creative writing.

Washington State History

Class description:
Come on an adventure! Explore the history of Washington State from pre-settlement to statehood and beyond. Topics include: Washington’s beginning, early settlers, Native Americans, treaties and conflicts, statehood, immigration, labor movement, great depression, World Wars, civil rights, state and local government, Bigfoot, local and global economies, and so much more. Students will discover through hands-on learning, creative writing, oral presentations, cooking, and multimedia usage.
